Check out the main ingredient of a product that’s called RealLead (or something
similar)  Comes in a quart bottle…

Would an informed person please explain the effect that leaded fuel has
    upon the automotive catalytic converter?

Leaded fuel also has practically no lead in it these days.

That level isn’t enough for some cars, so the best solution is to get
unleaded premium and add synthetic-lead-in-a-bottle (which cannot
legally contain any lead at all).

Many brands of this stuff say, in big letters right on top, "does not
    harm cat converters."

This begs the obvious question of whether one could retrofit an older
    car for a cat.

The lead (actually Tetra-Ethyl lead) combines with the catlyst (Rhodium,
Palladium and/or others) and therefore removes it from the reaction. Over
time, the catalyst gets used up, so the converter stops converting and
the smog runs freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :o )

The one time I tried going to unleaded on a cat/FI car, my immediate problem
was that the oxygen sensor got poisoned and the thing ran (barely) with a
mixture so rich that flames came out the end of the tailpipe. Replacement of
the FI and exhaust system with a header and a carb helped immensely.
