Liver of sufur

I was asked by an art teacher what liver of sulfur was. I had never heard of
it. I have discovered it a formed by heating potassium carbonate and sulfur and
is liver colored.

Anyone know what the compound is?

According to the Merck Index, 10th edition, Liver of Sulfur is also know as
sulfurated potash.  It is a mixture of potassium polysulfides, mainly trisulfides,
and potassium thiosulfate.  It contains not less than 12.8% sulfur as sulfide.

It has been incorrectly called potassium sulfide.
