It's cold out there – so let's fix it

It’s cold out there – so let’s fix it
By Arthur Weinreb  Friday, January 4, 2008

Currently Toronto and much of eastern Canada is in a deep freeze. The
temperature in some areas is close to -20 degrees Celsius (4 F). The
temperature combined with strong winds makes it just a tad nippy out
there.

We know that it’s cold outside because the weather is the number one
story in most of the media. The talking heads ignore the less
important news such as the crisis in Pakistan, the violence in Kenya
and the Iowa caucuses to tell us how cold it is out there. This must
be for all those dimwits that can’t discover for themselves that it’s
cold. We have high wind alerts, cold alerts, extreme cold alerts and
this is just on the relatively balmier days. The media is constantly
telling us the obvious; that the homeless should be off the streets;
that they are in danger of dying in the cold out there. Of course
those who are telling this see weather as the only reason not to let
people sleep on the sidewalks and parks that impede the lawful
enjoyment of the taxpayers. It’s there right to sleep outside unless
the temperature drops in which case it’s our fault that they are
homeless.

Canada isn’t the only place that is experiencing a deep freeze. The
U.K. is set to experience one of the coldest winters in the past 100
years. For those who are old enough to remember, this type of weather
is reminiscent of the great global cooling crisis of the late 1970s.
But back in the disco era, we didn’t know as much as we know now. So
let’s not just talk about the weather; let’s do something about it.

We all know now that it is a scientific certainty that carbon dioxide
spewing into the atmosphere is heating up poor old Mother Earth. We
know this as a fact because such renowned scientific minds as that
belonging to Internet inventor Al Gore tell us this is so. Much like
the Holocaust, global warming is certainty, save a few people who
doubt reality and who are properly labeled "deniers".

So something is wrong here. The planet is on fire and yet it’s
freezing outside. It must be that we just aren’t pumping enough carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere and is causing the freezing temperatures.
There can’t be any other reason for the cold temperatures. So let’s
not talk about the weather like in the olden days. Let’s take action!

The first thing that we should do is immediately ban all forms of
public transit. It’s time to rev up all those SUV’s so they can sit in
gridlock all day. If that won’t spew enough carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere to warm the place up, nothing will. Of course gas prices
just went up 3 cents a litre a couple of days ago. The price increase
was caused by oil topping $100 a barrel, the death of Benazir Bhutto
or the fact that a couple of days ago was Wednesday. The government
needs to immediately provide rebates to the populace so they can
afford to top their tanks, spew more carbon dioxide and increase these
sub zero temperatures.

This cold weather is no time for people to be trading carbon credits
or in Al Gore’s case, selling credits to themselves while making
enormous profits. An immediate ban must be placed on all of these
activities. And of course there are more minor steps that people can
take to increase the temperature. Let’s get rid of all these silly
fluorescent light bulbs and go back to the old bulbs. All greening
measures should cease until we can make the temperature rise to more
modern levels. Every little bit will help.

Gentlemen (and ladies) – start your engines. The homeless who are
outside freezing are depending upon you.

generic drug security; machine verifies

I saw a bit on 20/20.  Someone packaged up an NMR (?) to check drugs.
You drop in the bottle full of pills and the machine reports pass/fail
on previously characterized drug formulations.  Great why to stop
fraud.  Who manufactures this machine and what is the technology?
Will this find wide use?
Thanks

Shimadzu's AWFUL Bottom Line

The Bottom Line for Shimadzu

….Shimadzu’s annualized growth rate is an awful 2.02%!

The end of this fiscal year (31 March 2007) for Shimadzu Corporation
is an excellent time to sum up the results in lost sales which
Shimadzu has missed out on, in part, due to the persistent presence of
this audacious homepage, namely the Shimadzu Consumer Alerts website.
As of 31 March 2007, we had received over 900 unsolicited responses
from prospective customers who had completed our website survey and
stated that they won’t be doing business with Shimadzu. These
responses translate into the following lost dollar amounts for
Shimadzu :-)

131 GC x $15,000 = $1,965,000
315 HPLC x $30,000 = $9,450,000
87 LC/MS x $100,000 = $8,700,000
182 GC/MS x $50,000 = $9,100,000
63 MALDI x $100,000 = $6,300,000
396 UV/Vis x $10,000 = $3,960,000
140 TOC x $25,000 = $3,500,000
27 AA x $25,000 = $675,000
208 Fluorescence x $10,000 = $2,080,000

The grand total comes to ~ $45,730,000 in lost sales for Shimadzu. You
could say that we’re proud of our accomplishments, but our work
continues to remain unfinished…. stay tuned!

————————————————————————— —–

n.b. The 45,730 million dollar figure is a very conservative estimate.
The real cost that will never be known is from prospective customers
who have watched from the sidelines as horrified onlookers to an
automobile accident who wouldn’t give Shimadzu the time of day at this
point!

n.b. According to the Shimadzu Financial Summary for the year ended
March 31, 2007 Shimadzu net sales (when adjusted for inflation)
continued to lull below those figures reported for the year ended
March 31, 1992. 201,439 yen in FY1992 versus 262,432 yen in FY2007
translates to a 30.30 increase in sales. That’s 15 years of stagnant
growth and 15 full years of substandard performance. That’s also 15
plus years of inferior products which customers have shunned in
droves! Shimadzu has been growing at an annual rate of a puny 2.02%
for the past 15 years and they use advertising words like
"productivity, functionality and sensitivity." Sounds like a cart full
of $HIT-madzu…. are you buying it…. their $HIT that is!

n.b. While most other analytical instrumentation vendors have
witnessed double digit growth year after year, Shimadzu has watched
their numbers decline by single digits thru most of the 1990s to
actual losses for fiscal years 2001 and 2002. They managed to break
into the black ink…. but only barely for 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and
2007. Do you want this inferior crap in your lab?

Old saying: "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later" (it will
just cost more later)!

Other HPLC companies pump promises…. Shimadzu just sells SH*T!

PROOF! Global warming caused by argon!

A weak long-term correlation between atmospheric CO2 levels and
terrestrial warming is one of the basic "proofs" that Warmists offer
for their claims. On that reasoning the fact that the concentration of
argon in ice core bubbles goes up and down alongside CO2 over the long
term should "prove" that argon (another atmospheric gas) causes
warming too. Or maybe CO2 causes argon to emerge from somewhere! See
the graph below:

Who Killed Benazir Bhutto ? Washington Post Comments

How CIA or Al-CIA-DAH killed Bhutto ?

Only two yanks were the field operatives for the operation.

One sniper was chosen that looks like a pakistani. He was far away.

One nearby remote controlled bomb operator, fluent in Urdu and handler
of the third patsy.

One pakistani hired to be a patsi sacrificial lamb, who was hired
possibly as a reporter. The reporter was possibly given a tape
recorder with very strong and small bomb of hexogen or other
explosive.

1/ The sniper took a shot.
2/ The bomb operator observed it and triggered the bomb sacrificing
his cannon fodder and make it look like bomb assasination attempt.

This operation has the standard hall-marks of Al-CIA, which is too
cowardly to come in open and uses patsies who carry bombs not knowing
what they carry in the gadgets they are given as employees.

Al-Qaida = Al-Caida = Al-CIA = The CIA

CIA KILLED BENAZIR, after getting her into Pakistan, to put blame on
Musharraf and then to use that as an excuse to get into Pakistan and
get its nuclear weapons.

AMERICA WANTS TO STEAL THE OIL OF THE WORLD OF ISLAM IN THE MIDDLE
EAST AND CENTRAL ASIA.

The pakistani nuclear weapons are a threat to the THEIF.

It is a conflict of civilization to the YANK.

Every Buddhist and CONFUCIAN country EXCEPT China is under occupation
by the YANKs. Japan and Korea are prostitutes. Thailand is to bang
cock. China is a slave labor colony for cheap goods.

Only Moslem is independent.

India is small and can be dealt at the end also.

Remember, the country to be raped most and first was the indo-chinese
country of Vietnam. So they are OSTENSIBLY at peace with India because
they think too low of India just as indian derived indo-china.

The vietnamese were treated worse than animals and in the yank
mentality deserved to be agent-oranged, napalmed and run naked to save
their skin, which is exactly what happened.

Musharaf is no angel, and I am not his fan, my critique is directed
specifically at one point: your silly conjecture that Musharaf is
planning to cut a deal to give control of Pakistan to Islamists, and
in turn jeopardizing the security of pakistan’s nuclear arsenals. On
numerous times, I have been critical of the fawning of this
administration over Musharaf in light of his misdeeds. But i don’t
convict him of Bhutto’s murder without evidence(for all I know he may
have done it), i don’t convict him of being an islamist contrary to
the tide of opinion on this figure and his background, and I don’t
charge him with being the principal person who has failed to bring in
Osama or destroy AQ.

Would I trust Pervez Musharaf with running my country? No I don’t. Nor
do i think it is a bright idea to send any American troops into that
country UNDER THE CURRENT TIMING. Please refrain from spinning my
positions into straw men that you can attack. I made a specific
criticism of your suggestions that the US needs to actively pressure
Musharaf to let us send our troops into Pakistan. I have effectively
shown how there are many pitfalls in this strategy, and you have
failed to answer how we would answer any of these eventualities. The
smaller Bush’s footprint is in Pakistan right now the better, i don’t
know why that suggestion seems so radical?

Dear William,

Please go to youtube and watch Benezir Bhutto in an interview with
David Frost name a man she believed wanted her dead as the man who
murdered Osama Bin Laden!

Benezir said he was murdered by Omar Sheikh, that interview took place
two months ago, how can a dead man commit murder?

Even my seven year old nephew laughed on seeing Osama with his new
beard on the news, he screamed ‘thats fake, you can’t grow younger!’
at the screen.
He was proven right by British experts who said it was an obvious fake
but seriously how could anybody believe it to be real.

This is getting beyond ridiculous now. If your going to promote fake
bogeymen at least have the decency to make it sound convincing, the
media is the joke now.

Well, I’m a least glad that you figured out the part that said it was
a theory. But I can also see that you got the rest of it wrong. Well,
it’s a start.

You are wrong about me being a neocon, wanting to send troops into
Pakistan, wanting to control their people, you are wrong about the
paranoia. And more importantly, you are wrong about Musharaff. I hope
I am wrong about Musharaff. Does this surprise you? Here’s the point:
What Mush is doing isn’t exactly inspiring confidence in what he is
doing. Especially, how he is going about it. He leaves but no choice
but to wonder. He has been a do-nothing while Pakistan is falling
apart. And now he has a wild-eyed Imam captured from the Red Mosque.
Gee, maybe he will have to make a deal wuth him – too! What next? Good
question…

There are sooo many uncertanties of what happens in Pakistan, and for
them to have nukes – on top of whatever else takes place – is more
than a major concern to every country in the world. Let me know when
you figure that part out. Or maybe you like the situation the way it
is? Either way, I don’t care. I do care about the quality of the
Pakistani leadership. He has too much power to change the landscape of
the world and exerts too little in power to keep it safe. Let me know
when you figure that out – too! And – go change your underwear – it
sounds like you have soiled it again….

Posted by: Plainfacto | January 1, 2008 03:49 PM

Do you know – in particular – the people that were killed in this
raid? Sure, he said they were the enemy, once someone is dead he is
free to claim they are anyone that he wants them to be.)Plainfacto

HERE IS THE PROBLEM WITH YOUR THEORY, THEY SHOWED THE SIEGE AND RAID
IN THE RED MOSQUE OF PAKISTAN ON VIDEO. IN FACT, EVERYONE IN PAKISTAN
AND THE WORLD KNEW ABOUT IT BEFORE IT HAPPENED BECAUSE SECURITY FORCES
SURROUNDED THE MOSQUE AND DEMANDED FOR MANY DAYS THAT THE RADICAL IMAM
BE TURNED OVER. SO YES THERE IS FILM OF IT, AND THERE WAS A LENGTHY
SIEGE THAT WAS ALSO TELEVISED. KIND OF HARD TO FAKE THAT ONE.

Second of all your theory, has no chance of being right, therefore it
isn’t a theory but wild speculation. I don’t trust Musharaf either,
but the person who betrayed us by not seriously hunting Al Quaeda is
not Pervez Musharaf, he has no duty to protect us and hunt down Bin
laden, the person who failed to adequately prioritize hunting Bin
Laden is George Bush.

As to your theory about the assassination attempts, ie Musharaf has
had dozen assassination attempts and Bhutto just two, how come the
attempts on her life where successful. Well maybe because Musharaf is
not an idiot who just weeks after one assassination attempt, sticks
his head out of sun roof surrounded by a crowd of people who have not
passed security clearance?

Maybe Musharaf killed her I don’t know for sure, Maybe AQ? But your
wild theory on Musharaf a secular military dictator deciding to hand
over power to the mullahs is completely contradicted by history and
the facts. Why would a general want to turn a military dictatorship
into an Islamic one, by definition he has to share power with Islamic
clergy and he has to impose Islamic law, in short he has to give up
power. Something that Musharaf has not been to keen on, and not just
that he has to give up power to the one group that has tried to kill
him, and who we have taped evidence of him trying to kill them.

Maybe the reason Musharaf doesn’t push too hard is because he thinks
he will unleash civil war. This is not a betrayal of America, he is
the president of pakistan, he has no duty to protect America, that is
George Bush’s job. If he wanted bin laden so bad maybe he should have
tried sending the 101st Airborne into Tora Bora, as opposed to relying
on some mercenary cut throats who obviously don’t have the same
motivation to run up a mountain and get their face blow off by
suicidal jihadists with RPGs in the dead of winter. Maybe if Bush
cared more about rooting out AQ on the Pakistan and Afghan border then
about securing Iraq’s energy resources we wouldn’t be wondering where
Osama is right now? Bush should have done in 2003 what you are
demanding a foreign president to do for us today. Calling Bush and
Cheney criminals is an insult to the good honest criminals everywhere,
and continuing to find Muslim and foreign scapegoats for Bush’s
failings is not productive and may lead to further damage to our
foreign policy.

I am not picking on you for the sake of damaging your ego or just to
be a jerk. YOUR METHOD OF POSTULATING FANCIFUL NEW THREATS BASED ON
NOTHING BUT PARANOIA IS THE CRITICAL NEOCON ERROR IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

I am sorry i don’t accept your analysis as being anything but
speculative, and in fact your method of coming up with a conclusion
and then looking for facts to support your said conclusion is
precisely the error that our political class seems to keep making in

Sparklers

A sparkler is a type of hand-held firework that burns slowly while
emitting coloured flames, sparks, and many effects.

The "classic" type of sparkler consists of a thin metal rod
approximately 20 cm (8 inches) long that has been dipped in a thick
batter of pyrotechnic composition and allowed to dry. This composition
is rich in a metallic fuel such as aluminium or iron, which when
burned creates silver or gold coloured sparks, respectively. The fuel
typically contains potassium nitrate or sometimes potassium chlorate
as an oxidizer, sometimes with sulphur and carbon. Coloured flame can
be achieved by addition of nitrates or chlorides of barium (light
green), copper (blue/green), or strontium (red).

Study says North Atlantic waters may be warming naturally

Study says North Atlantic waters may be warming naturally
Charles Mandel , CanWest News Service
Published: Saturday, January 05, 2008

The authors of a new paper published this week argue that warmer water
in the North Atlantic Ocean – often cited as being caused by climate
change and a trigger of more severe storms – may occur naturally in
part.

Researchers from North Carolina’s Duke University say an analysis of
available records shows an uneven warming of the North Atlantic
Ocean’s surface waters in a 50-year period between 1950 and 2000.

Susan Lozier, a professor of physical oceanography and a lead author
on the paper, believes that it is premature to "conclusively attribute
these regional patterns of heat gain to greenhouse warming."

The research appeared Thursday in Science Express, the online edition
of the journal Science.

Although the surface waters warmed over the 50-year period, the sub-
polar regions cooled while the subtropical and tropical waters of the
North Atlantic warmed.

The pattern is attributed to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), a
natural and cyclical wind circulation that has a strong impact on the
underlying ocean.

"So contrary to some people’s expectations, as our climate evolves we
might expect everything to get warmer, but what we found instead is we
had a very sharp contrast between these two regions," Lozier said.

In fact, the researchers say that large-scale, decadal changes
"associated with the NAO are primarily responsible for the heat ocean
content changes in the North Atlantic over the past 50 years."

Lozier said she hoped the research wouldn’t be used as a "referendum
on whether there is or isn’t greenhouse warming." Rather, she said the
more "interesting story" is that both natural variability and human
change are causing warming in the waters.

The researchers studied the North Atlantic Ocean because it has the
most data available, 10 times the amount that may be found for other
ocean basins, according to Lozier.

The research only goes to 2000 because of a delay in data that comes
in from countries around the world, Lozier said.

The scientists used an ocean circulation model to predict how winds,
evaporation, precipitation and the exchange of heat with the
atmosphere influences the North Atlantic’s heat content over time.
They also compared the computer predictions to real observations.

Danny Harvey, a geography professor at the University of Toronto, said
the Duke University team’s research isn’t inconsistent with the larger
global picture on climate change. "On the whole that warming is
consistent with what we would expect from increasing greenhouse gases.

"That’s not to say that changes in ocean currents don’t locally
overwhelm the global average picture."

The researchers also noted the study should not be viewed in isolation
and postulated that other parts of the world’s ocean systems may have
taken up the excess heat produced by global warming.
