Gopher/WWW/mosaic chem server list wanted…

Netters-
I’m compiling a list of network chemistry servers for my department.
When I get done, I plan to post it here as well.  I would like to hear what
servers are known out there, that may or may not be on the main links.
I have the ‘WWW virtual library: Chemistry’ and ‘ACS Gopher’ as the main
servers.  Are there any ‘links’ out there that are not connected to them?
What electronic journals (chemistry related) exist on the internet?
What (chemistry related) links do sci.chem readers use?

Please e-mail me responses, or post.  I’ll post a summary here, including
http links.

                Virtually,
                Edward Wolpert

STOP THIS THREAD NOW!!!!

dear netters:

haven’t we had had enough of creation vs evolution debate.

we want this newsgroup to be fat free cholesterol free tonya harding, lorena
bobbit, menendez brothers AND creation/evolution free.

This is SCI.CHEM. I am sure it would not be too difficult to set up appropriate
newsgroups for the above topics.

Actually, I don’t mind the FAT and CHOLESTEROL part. Hey! at least it is
chemistry related material.

Amethyst Glass

Some kinds of clear glass, when exposed to sunlight for a long time (decades?),
will turn a shade of light purple called amethyst by collectors. An example
of this are the glass insulators on telephone poles along railroad tracks.

Does anyone know what reaction is taking place to turn the glass from clear
to purple?

or anything else that is relevant to semiconductors in general.

HOW TO VOTE

Send MAIL to:   ses-v…@amdahl.com
Just Replying should work if you are not reading this on a mailing list.

Your mail message should contain one of the following statements:
      I vote YES on sci.engr.semiconductors
      I vote NO on sci.engr.semiconductors

You may also ABSTAIN in place of YES/NO – this will not affect the outcome.
Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program.  The
votetaker will respond to your received ballots with a personal acknowledge-
ment by mail – if you do not receive one within several days, try again.
It’s your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly.

Only one vote per person and per account will be counted.  Addresses and
votes of all voters will be published in the final voting results list.

Solvent evaporation in pa

In Message-ID: <46.40.223.0NE05…@fullcoll.edu>
tom_mor…@fullcoll.edu (Tom Morris) writes :

TM>I need info on evaporation rates of solvents in paints.  Please oh
TM>please.  Can anyone help?  Thanks, Tom

I saw your first message but didn’t reply as I thought 100′s of
others would :-)

I’m sure if you call your local Exxon, Shell or Phillips office
and ask for a solvents charts with evaporation rates they will
oblidge. The evap. rates are relative to Butyl Acetate (=100) or
similar and they will give you empirical data to work with.

Shell (UK) have done a lot of work with an "Evaporometer" which
measures ER. I have lots of figures…. I’m a long way from
you……but if you don’t have any joy with the oil companies give
me another call.

TIFF Viewer for JACS Supplementary Material

I’ve heard that the ACS now has an ftp site with TIFF images
of the supplementary material (from JACS and perhaps other
journals?) A friend said that the TIFF images are ‘type 4 fax’
which apparently means you need a unique TIFF viewing program
to see them.

Does anyone have a preferred TIFF viewer (for Mac or PC)?

Thanks

questions about solid state chemistry

Dear netter,

Now it is time for me to think about next after the graduation. I
did not pay much attention on the following topics until recently. If
you can give me some of your comments, I will appreciate that. I am
going to get my Ph D by the end of this summer.

   The questions are:

(1) What do you think is the next big breakthrough in the solid state
chemsitry field?

(2) Where are the best places to work in the solid state chemistry
field?

(3) What kind of materials will be in "fashion" in the near future?

I appreciate your input. I am particular interested in the materials
chemistry. I feel it is good to have a chance to think about these questions.

Best wishes,

Leon

*New* Ka2 for H2S?

I have noticed that in some newly published textbooks the Ka2 for H2S is
10^-19 whereas in some books it is 10^-15.  What happened?  New
thermodynamic data?  This certainly changes the treatment of sulfide
ppt.  Any references or ideas?
